An Offering

Take the winter field
where a light snow falls
sideways, swirls, then dives
to the bright ground,
making the wind visible.
Layer upon layer until
just from accumulation
an alchemy occurs.

An open expanse of land
usually cultivated, too often
battleground, sometimes only
background, and now, dwindling
genome of northern leopard frog,
grey fox, the house sparrow.

Such a field may be left fallow
or become a place to seed,
tend, gather and return
kindness to the wild.
